Dr. Fleming is a board certified eye surgeon working in Fort Bragg on the North Coast in California. He is a graduate of the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine.
Dr. Fleming's long history with Intacs™ began in 1986 with the original research on this new technique. He established a laboratory in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with Intacs™ inventor
A.E. "Gene" Reynolds, O.D., Ph.D. From this research he wrote the first scientific article on Intacs™ which was published in the Journal of Refractive Surgery (see reference list)
in 1987.
In 1996, Dr. Fleming began teaching the Intacs™ procedure to other eye surgeons worldwide. He presented courses in England, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Greece, Spain, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Canada.
In a number of these locations he personally performed Intacs™ surgery and proctored surgeons during their first cases.
Throughout his history with the Intacs™ project, Dr. Fleming has achieved a number of
firsts. He performed the world's first Intacs™ surgery in a patient with previous LASIK
in 1999. In the same year he performed the United States' first Intacs™ procedure in a
patient with keratoconus. He also did the world's first Intacs™ in a patient with previous radial keratotomy and the first Intacs™ surgery in Asia (in Singapore). In 2002,
he coauthored the first Intacs™ textbook (Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments) with
Drs. Lovisolo and Pesando.
Dr. Fleming also performs corneal transplantation, LASIK, cataract surgery, eyelid surgery, and retinal laser procedures.
